In a marathon day with three rounds of meals, Joaquin tackled savory for the first time. He created three mystery baskets this morning and made an appetizer (40 mins), entree (60 mins), and dessert (45 mins). Of course the experience required some real competitors—thank you Pumpum, Pillo, and Sochi.
Appetizer
Mystery Ingredients: chicken breast, mustard, mushrooms, and eggs
Plating his mustard mushroom dip Chef Pumpum, please present your appetizer. Tasting Pumpum's appetizer Chef Pillo, please present your appetizer. Chef Sochi, please present your appetizer. Tasting his appetizer. Joaquin's appetizer: Yum! The dip was a great idea and the darkness of the chicken, egg, and dip was beautifully balanced by the freshness of the cucumber.
Entree
Mystery Ingredients: ground beef, spinach, pears, and tomatoes
Chopping Big Whoppers from the backyard for his entree Making beef patties. Waiting for his protein to get out of the broiler Joaquin's entree: The patty was delish with the tomatoes, and the grilled pear was wonderful. I thought the spinach might need to be sauteed, but along with the fresh tomato it was perfect with the warm pear and the grilled red peppers.
Dessert
Mystery Ingredients: apples, bananas, figs, and watermelon
Our kitchen mess after the dessert round Sochi's dessert (by mama). Fruity compote with a fig and banana cookie, topped with banana coconut frosting and fresh figs. Joaquin's dessert: He meant to make a cake but claimed he didn't have time for it. Truthfully, he forgot again to add eggs and flour to his baked fruit mix.
The Judges’ Evaluation
APPETIZER ROUND. Pumpum got chopped. ENTREE ROUND. Pillo missed two mystery ingredients and got chopped. Joaquin's grilled pear salad was a bomb! DESSERT ROUND. Joaquin tried to fix his liquid batter the best way he knows: Throwing a bunch of berries at it. Sochi won this round, but Joaquin's superior previous dishes awarded him the Chopped Champion title.
